1916 Commemoration Ceremony

On 15th January 2016, the entire school community of Scoil Naomh Bhríde, together with members of the Board of Management, took part in a ceremony to commemorate the centenary of the 1916 Rising and to celebrate 100 years since the proclamation of the Irish Republic.
Members of the Defence Forces from Kilkenny Barracks arrived at our school in uniform to present us with our National Flag and a copy of The 1916 Proclamation.

The children were actively involved in the ceremony. Leanne Gleeson from 6th class read out a section of the proclamation, while the youngest and oldest members of our school Kate Connolly and Izzie Walsh received the flag and proclamation from the soldiers.
We then sang our National Anthem ‘Amhrán na bhFiann’ and afterwards the children were invited to ask a variety of questions to our visitors.
The children learned about the importance of our National Flag, how it should be cared for, and the protocol that surrounds this vibrant symbol of our nation.

On the 15th March, together with every other primary schools in the country, we will be raising this flag in a special ceremony during which the 1916 Proclamation will also be read.
